The Core Programme

How it works

We Recruit Mentors

We recruit, assess and train the best and brightest university students to be peer mentors and aspirational role models.

You Register the Club

You sign up, tell us what day and time you would like the club to run, and inform us of any other policies or things to expect.

We Allocate Mentors

We place up to 4 mentors in your school to work with up to 72 students in years 5-11. All our mentors are DBS checked.

Programme Delivery

Mentors use our tried and tested curriculum to run weekly 1-hour sessions, same day and time each week.

Regional Competitions

Students put their skills to the test in two of the largest debating competitions in the UK, which culminate in National Grand Finals.

National Grand Finals

The top schools from across the UK battle it out at prestigious venues to be crowned National Champions.

Debate Mate is for every student – not just the high-achievers or the confident speakers. Our programmes are designed to unlock potential in young people of all abilities and backgrounds, creating a level playing field where every voice is heard and valued. We believe that communication is a skill that can be learned, not a talent reserved for a few, and our approach ensures that all students have the opportunity to thrive.

Our peer-peer mentoring model sets Debate Mate apart. University students and former Debate Mate students lead our programmes, creating an inspiring and relatable bridge between pupils and role models they can truly connect with. This approach not only builds students’ confidence and communication skills but also fosters aspiration – showing young people what’s possible.

Debate Mate extends far beyond debating – it’s about opening doors and raising aspirations. Through partnerships with global businesses, universities, and community organisations, students gain access to real-world experiences and professional role models. We equip young people with the skills, confidence, and networks they need to thrive – not just in school, but in life.
