The Debate Mate Grand Finals season came to a close with one of the most electric performances so far. Don’t be misled by the size of the students – the Primary UDL Grand Finalists delivered thought and eloquence, far beyond their years.
Overlooking the Thames and landmarks like the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Northeastern University provided a striking venue, with modern rooms and open spaces that allowed our young debaters to truly command the stage. For many students, it was their first time in the capital, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
The Schools
Attendance was dominated by Mancunian schools, with six of the nine competing institutions travelling from the region, joined by one school from the West Midlands and two from London. Despite their varied backgrounds, every team arrived with the same purpose: to showcase the skills they’ve honed through fourteen weeks of diligence and effort.
The competition was fierce, with students demonstrating exceptional composure and confidence in a high-pressure environment. The participating schools were: Rolls Crescent, Varna Community, Ryefield, St Luke’s CE, Elmhurst, Parochial CE, Northfield Manor, St Mary’s RC, and, last but certainly not least, Longsight Community Primary School.
The Debates
Throughout the competition, students showcased remarkable skill, talent, and persuasive speaking abilities. In the prepared debate, they passionately argued for or against the motion, “This House Would Ban Football Academies,” presenting well-structured arguments and engaging rebuttals. They also excelled in the unprepared debate, debating the motion, “This House Would Rather Be an Adult Than a Child,” where their quick thinking and natural brilliance truly shone.
The Grand Finale
The highlight of the competition was the Grand Final, where Elmhurst and Northfield Manor Primary School went head-to-head in an enthralling debate on the motion, “This House Would Pay People to Recycle.” The debate was intense from start to finish, keeping both the audience and judges on the edge of their seats. Both teams impressed with their confident delivery, compelling arguments, and consistent Points of Information (POIs), demonstrating excellent debating skills and determination.
It was an incredibly close final, with both schools displaying passion, resilience, and outstanding teamwork. After careful deliberation, Northfield Manor Primary School emerged victorious and was crowned the Grand Final champions!
A huge well done to every school that participated and made this competition such a fantastic success. Your enthusiasm was evident throughout. Finally, congratulations to Northfield Manor Primary School on becoming this year’s Grand Final winners, and to Elmhurst Primary School, who were very worthy runners-up!
