Following the incredible success of Debate Mate’s 2012 and 2013 summer programmes in Flanker and Trenchtown, we have now established ourselves full time in Jamaica. In the 2013/2014 academic year, we ran a 10-week pilot programme in 20 schools across the Island with Jamaican university students. This pilot was funded by the Digicel Foundation and the Sandals Foundation, and culminated on 16th December, 2013 with the largest national full day debating competition of its kind at the University of West Indies, with all participating schools competing to be crowned the Debate Mate Jamaica Cup winners.
As a result of the success with the Pilot, Debate Mate Jamaica has secured the support of the Digicel Foundation and the Sandals Foundation for another Programme year. The 2014/2015 year is positioned to be a massively successful year of activities for the Debate Mate Jamaica Programme. The programme will be expanded to 30 schools across the island. We will have an official launch of the programme in early November followed by 20 weeks of mentorship, Urban Debate competitions and then the grand Debate Mate Cup in May 2015.
