Debate Mate USA

Richard Weisbach graduated from Brandeis University in 2013 and went on to  receive an Masters in Education from Boston University in 2015. While at  Brandeis, Richard was both captain and president of the Brandeis debate  team. Richard began mentoring for Debate Mate USA during it’s first year as  a pilot program. During his three years mentoring Richard mentored at both  the Washington Irving Middle School and the Patrick Lyndon Pilot School  which won the 2012 Debate Mate Cup under his mentorship. Before joining  Debate Mate Richard was a Teach for America Corps member teaching math in  both Fall River Massachusetts and Boston. Richard also currently is a  trustee of the American Parliamentary Debate Association.

Debate Mate Caribbean

Scarlett graduated from LSE with a degree in History. She has debated since she was at school, representing her university at the World Debating Championships and has been a Debate Mate mentor for the past 4 years, teaching at Petchey Academy, Evelyn Grace Academy and Acland Burghley School. She has worked a lot for Debate Mate internationally in the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean, and intends to start a training contract at Slaughter and May once she has finished working at Debate Mate.

Subsequent to an honours degree from the University of the West Indies and over a decade of working in Corporate Jamaica, Janine’s start-up implemented technology solutions for the classroom . She holds two awards recognizing her volunteer work in schools.

Cindy completed an MSc in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and a BA in Media, Information, and Technoculture from the University of Western Ontario. She has worked extensively in children’s programming, having mentored with Debate Mate throughout her time at LSE and taught creative writing and theatre for over five years in her native Ottawa. She has led international summer programmes in Jamaica and Kenya, and now oversees the permanent Debate Mate programme in the Caribbean.

Charles Frost has an extensive background in Leadership and Public Speaking. Upon entering the University of the West Indies he was enlisted on the Dean’s List for academic excellence after obtaining a 4.0 GPA. Being very active in Hall life and University life as a whole, Charles has been elected Hall Chairman (ABC Hall), Class President and Captain of numerous sport teams (Badminton, table tennis etc.). As President of the ABC Hall Public Speaking and Debating Society he led his team to victory in the 2013 Intra-Mural Debating Competition and won the Mary Seacole Hall Speech Award for Most Outstanding Public Speaker. He also represented the University in several local debating competitions.

Over the last five years, Germaine has been at the forefront of the mission to advance the interest of debating, public speaking and critical thinking, amongst a broad cross-section of young Jamaicans. He has pioneered the formation of a national umbrella organization for debating in Jamaica; the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment (JADE) Limited, for which he now serves as President. He has represented the University of Technology, Jamaica a record four times at the World Universities Debating Championships as well as several other local and international debating tournaments. Germaine is the Convenor for the 2016 Pan-American Universities Debating Championships to be held in Montego Bay Jamaica.

Jevon started mentoring with Debate Mate in 2013. He mentored the 2015 Debate Mate Cup (Jamaica) champion team and was awarded that year for being the Most Outstanding Mentor. He read Banking and Finance at The University of the West Indies, Mona–WJC. There, he served as President of the Debating Society and debated at WUDC 2015. He spent summer 2015 working with young people from all over the world at Exploration Schools at Yale University as an Instructor for Debate and business related workshops and also as a Residential Advisor. His current academic field is Development Studies.

Rockwell Walker has been with Debate Mate Jamaica since the beginning! He was a student on the summer programme in Boystown in 2012 and has been involved ever since. When he’s not working with Debate Mate, Rockwell plays the baritone saxophone and bass drum for the St. Michaels Steppers Marching Band, where he also serves as the discipline manager.
