Margaret McCabe: Founder

Margaret McCabeMargaret McCabe the founder and chief executive of Debate Mate.  Margaret has over twenty years experience as a commercial barrister combined with two decades in the voluntary sector including Centre Point (homeless under 25s), NSPCC Justice for Children programme and as an advisor Human Rights Watch.

 

 

Jess Dix: Educational Development Director

Jess graduated from Warwick University in 2007 with a degree in Comparative American Studies. As part of her degree she spent a year studying History at the University of California, LA. Jess started the Teacher First Programme in 2007 and worked as an English and History teacher at the Lammas School and Sports College in East London. During her time at the school she was appointed as Whole School Literacy Co-ordinator and was committed to creating a debating community within the school. Jess joined Debate Mate in September 2010 and will be focusing on educational development.

 

Joe Spark: Programme Director

Joe graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Politics. During his time at Cardiff he was heavily involved in developing debating within Wales at all levels. After 3 years of freelance schools coaching, with a number of organisations and as Head Debate Coach at Cardiff, Joe joined Debate Mate in September 2009. Since joining Debate Mate he has retained his involvement with the university debating circuit and has become a respected coach and adjudicator at the highest level.

 

Rushabh Ranavat: Programme Director

Rushabh graduated LSE in 2010 with First Class Honours in Philosophy and Economics. He has been debating since his school years where he represented Hong Kong in the World Schools Debating Championships and also represented LSE in the World Universities Debating Championships where he was a Finalist, and ranked within the top ten speakers at both competitions. He has coached both school and university students internationally for the past three years. Rushabh first mentored for Debate Mate in Petchey Academy, and went on to join as a Program Director in September 2010.

 

Ben McNelly: Programme Director

Ben graduated from Queen's University in Canada with a Bachelor's degree in Political Studies and has recently completed his Master's degree at the LSE. During his undergraduate studies, Ben debated and adjudicated for four years at the national and international level including at two World Championships in 2007 and 2009. He was the Vice President of the Queen's Debating Union in his fourth year at Queen's and has recently been a mentor with Debate Mate at two schools in London. He joined Debate Mate as Programme Director in September 2010.

 

Dom Byrne: Programme Director

Dominik graduated from University of Birmingham in 2010 in African Studies with Development. During his time at university he was involved in both in British Parliamentary debating and Model United Nations debate formats. While being head debate coach of the Model United Nations society at Birmingham in 2009, Dominik joined Debate Mate as a Mentor in 3 schools in the Birmingham area. Dominik joined Debate Mate as a Programme Director in September 2010.

 

Sam Neville: Development and Fundraising Assistant

Sam NevilleSam graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Philosophy. She represented Birmingham at the World University Debating Championships, won a national debating championship and reached the finals of many others. She was also Chair of the debating society and acted as a cultural ambassador on a British Council sponsored trip to Mumbai. Sam joined Debate Mate as Development and Fundraising Assistant in October 2009.
